I also tried your idea of adding to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf: alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad and also options snd-hda-intel model=auto but NO sound yet I might also mention that besides getting 'Dummy Output' as my audio card under Preferences Sound, whenever I load up the gnome-Alsamixer I get a blank panel with NO sliders, no columns, just a blank panel. I take that to mean that the Alsamixer doesn't see any sound cards.
